»Vagina Monologues – stage sets«

The Challenge
This German version of the play The Vagina Monologues required stage sets which would be visually impressive, managing to focus people’s attention on the one hand; on the other, they needed to be reticent enough to allow the main protagonists to be the real focus. The entire piece was performed by deaf actresses.

The Concept
The stage was dominated by colour. Our main ingredient in guiding people’s attention was the colour red, allowing focal points to pop up on the simple backdrop of the stage. The key visual before the backdrop was chairs, stools and – over and over – the actresses themselves. Spotlight on, sign language in action. The focus was thus strongly trained on the actresses who performed the play in sign language. The voices from offstage which complemented the performance for those audience members who could hear were kept as neutral as the overall stage design. The action was given additional dynamic by various black risers set at different heights. They created tension between the figures and their role in the action. Visible red on black.
